Research shows that approximately 7.6 million animals end up in animal shelters yearly due to either negligence on the path of their previous family, them getting missing or outright maltreatment. 3.9 million are dogs, and the other 3.3 are cats.
Animals have feelings and emotions; their mental health matters too. Just as humans need a conducive living environment, constant food, clean water, medical care, proper attention, and support, so do they. Amazingly, the number of people who consider adopting pets has drastically skyrocketed over the last few years.
As impressive as this sounds, many things have to be put in place before you decide to buy a pet or adopt one and bring them home. For people who have never had pets, it isn't as easy and cozy as it looks.
There is more to owning a pet than having a cute creature curled up beside you and offering companionship and friendship on your favorite sofa during your bad and even good days. This article aims to provide essential sensitization and somewhat professional advice on what you need to know before owning a pet.
As stated earlier, the environment must be conducive for you and your pet. Below is a list of things you should consider and put in place before bringing a pet home.
Before buying or while processing the adoption processes, get a veterinary doctor to check the pet and affirm its health. Ensure that it is properly vaccinated and does not have any underlying ailment, as this could be draining for you both mentally and financially.
If your pet is healthy and good to go, make sure to get pet insurance so that you do not have to worry about outrageous bills in a situation where your pet gets injured or falls ill.
Furthermore, you can never go wrong with pet insurance, as it will always come through when your pet has a problem. You only have to bother about its vaccination. A comprehensive insurance plan covers most major other issues.
Having allergies to sure pets is an actual thing. This is caused by an abnormal immune reaction to the proteins in an animal’s skin cells, saliva, or urine - these allergies are relatively common and frequently occur in asthmatic people. They also tend to be in the blood thereby, running in families.
There are at least two million cases of pet-related allergies yearly. Unfortunately, this condition cannot be cured and can be lifelong. In some, it is just a runny nose and sneezing; in others, they could even encounter difficulties in breathing. Before adopting a pet, ensure that you or any member of your family do not have allergies.
Just as you wouldn't go to or like to be where you are not wanted, so does that animal. Animals sense your attitude, read your body language, and hear what you say. They are more intelligent than we tend to give them credit for. Before you bring a pet home, please, ensure that you have a proper conversation with everyone who lives in the space shared with the pet; seek their approval.
They do not have to love it, care about it or even be responsible for feeding and cleaning it. They should just be okay with having it around. A place where there is a rift, such as a divorce, is not a healthy environment to raise a pet. Seeing and being around violence could mess with or ruin their mental health, causing them to act abnormally or even withdraw.
Before adopting a pet, make sure you will be consistent and free to take care of it properly. Pets need to be fed at intervals, have their water changed, and also need companionship just as humans do. Having a pet is just like having a baby. You have to do most things for them because they cannot care for themselves.
If you are an extremely busy person who barely ever has time for yourself or do not return every day, you have no business having a pet. If you are also impatient and cannot deal with their excesses like cleaning up after them when they poop, urinate, or puke, discipline them in love when they do something nasty, you should rule out the idea of having a pet.
Pets are unique and adorable and should be appropriately treated. Remember to always look out for your pets, make sure their health is treated with all the seriousness it deserves, including getting insurance, and treat them in a way you wouldn't mind being treated.
